CCHRA's National Code of Ethics
CCHRA's National Code of Ethics identifies and outlines the standards of behaviour relating to fairness, justice, truthfulness, and social responsibility. At the June 2004 Board meeting of the CCHRA, the following code was ratified for Certified Human Resources Professionals (CHRPs), CHRP candidates, and exam registrants.
1. Preamble
As HR practitioners in the following categories:
Certified Human Resources Professionals,
CHRP Candidates, or
CHRP Exam Registrants,
we commit to abide by all requirements of the Code of Ethics of the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations (CCHRA), as listed in this document. (Where provincial codes are legislated, those will prevail.)
2. Competence
Maintain competence in carrying out professional responsibilities and provide services in an honest and diligent manner.
Ensure that activities engaged in are within the limits of one’s knowledge, experience and skill.
When providing services outside one’s level of competence, or the profession, the necessary assistance must be sought so as not to compromise professional responsibility.
3. Legal Requirements
Adhere to any statutory acts, regulation or by-laws which relate to the field of human resources management, as well as all civil and criminal laws, regulations and statutes that apply in one’s jurisdiction.
Not knowingly or otherwise engage in or condone any activity or attempt to circumvent the clear intention of the law.
4. Dignity in the Workplace
Support, promote and apply the principles of human rights, equity, dignity and respect in the workplace, within the profession and in society as a whole.
5. Balancing Interests
Strive to balance organizational and employee needs and interests in the practice of the profession.
6. Confidentiality
Hold in strict confidence all confidential information acquired in the course of the performance of one’s duties, and not divulge confidential information unless required by law and/or where serious harm is imminent.
7. Conflict of Interest
Either avoid or disclose a potential conflict of interest that might influence or might be perceived to influence personal actions or judgments.
8. Professional Growth and Support of Other Professionals
Maintain personal and professional growth in human resources management by engaging in activities that enhance the credibility and value of the profession.
9. Enforcement
The Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations works collaboratively with its member associations to develop and enforce high standards of ethical practice among all its members.

More on the Exam
Candidates have three hours to complete the assessment. The passing grade for the NPPA is set at 70 per cent. Candidates achieving a passing grade will receive their CHRP designation. If you do not pass the NPPA, you can continue to take the exam and pay the required fee ($500.00* + GST) until a passing grade is attained. There is no limit to the number of times you can take the NPPA within the five year period after passing the NKE.
Please note: Those who do not pass the NPPA within five years of passing the NKE can no longer use the CHRP candidate title and will have to begin the certification process from the beginning. For more information on this process, please click here.
The National Professional Practice AssessmentTM is offered in the spring and fall of each year. Candidates must complete and submit a registration form to their provincial HR association at least 60 days prior to the scheduled exam date. Click here for dates of future exams. Information about specific times and locations where exams will be held is available through your provincial HR association.
For more information on how to prepare for the exam, please visit the Exam Study Resources section of our Web site. It should be noted sample NPPA questions with recommended answers are provided in this section of the Web site.

* Fees are subject to change without notice at the discretion of CCHRA.
Exam Fees
The cost of writing the NKE is $250* + applicable taxes.
The cost of writing the NPPA is $500* + applicable taxes.
Please note: To ensure that the NKE and NPPA continue to reflect current and future best practices in human resources, ongoing investments are required to validate and update these assessment processes.
Exam Dates and Application Deadlines
Normally, the NKE and NPPA are held the first Saturday in May and October of each year. Exceptions will be made when these dates coincide with a major holiday or holiday weekend. Exam dates are posted one year in advance of the day the exam is held.
Both exams are held concurrently from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Please check with your provincial HR association for the location, times and more information regarding upcoming exams.
The registration deadline for the next National Knowledge ExamTM and National Professional Practice AssessmentTM is March 2, 2007.
